Cottonís Career Night Helps Lady Tigers Bring Home Trophy
Melissa Cotton poured in a career-best 18 points and the Scotland County Lady Tigers clamped down defensively on Marion County to secure a 37-29 victory in the consolation finals of the North Shelby Tournament on January 18th.
It wasnít all smooth sailing for SCR-I, which trailed 6-4 at the end of the first period.
ďAt the beginning of the game our shots just werenít falling,Ē said Coach TJ Young. ďWe were playing hard, scrapping for all four quarters. We just kept telling the girls that sooner or later, as long as we kept fighting, the shots would fall, and they did in a big way in the fourth period.Ē
But it was the second period when the Lady Tigers took charge, using an 11-6 run to lead 15-12 at the break.
Scotland Countyís defense did the job in the third period, holding Marion County to just four points, helping extend the lead to 23-16.
The offense came to life in the final eight minutes of the contest. Marion County scored 13 points down the stretch, but Cotton nailed a pair of three pointers and finished with 10 fourth-quarter points to hold of any chance of a Marion County rally.
The junior forward finished with 18 points to lead all scorers. She also grabbed six rebounds on the night. Ashley Tague pitched in with eight points while Kaitlin Caldwell grabbed a team-best eight rebounds on the evening. Kirsten Johnson led the defense with four steals.
