SCR-I Swats Hornets 49-41 In Tournament Action
What started as blow-out in the making ended too close for comfort for most Scotland County fans as the Tigers held on for a 49-41 win over Atlanta in the consolation semifinals of the North Shelby Tournament on January 16th.
The eight-seeded Hornets had no answer for Cody Musgrove. The senior forward opened the game with eight straight points forcing an Atlanta timeout with 5:05 on the clock.
Two free throws by Musgrove made it 14-6 with 3:18 left in the opening frame. But Atlanta went on an 8-2 run before baskets by Jacob Howard and Musgrove pushed the lead back to 20-14 to close the first period.
Both teams cooled off offensively in the second period. SCR-I held a 25-19 advantage with 5:10 left to play before going nearly four minutes with a bucket. Musgrove ended the drought with a three point play to help SCR-I lead 30-22 at half time.
A fastbreak basket by Musgrove followed by a pair of free throws from Andrew Duley made it 34-22 just minutes into the third quarter. But Atlanta rallied to outscore the Tigers 10-8 in the period to trim the deficit to 38-32.
The lead remained at six points until Kyle Shelley scored on back-to-back possessions to make it 44-36. But a three pointer by the Hornets cut the lead to 44-39 with 1:29 left to play.
Atlanta took advantage of a late technical foul on Scotland County but the Tigers were able to hold on for the 49-41 victory.
Musgrove poured in a season-high 28 points to lead all scorers. Shelley added six points for Scotland County, which improved to 6-8 on the season.
