Ladybirds Stay Perfect With 62-30 Win Over SCR-I
South Shelby improved to a perfect 10-0 on the season with a 62-30 victory in Memphis on January 8th.
The Ladybirds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the games first seconds, but SCR-I didnít fold to the second ranked team in Missouri Class 3.
Kelsey Frazier scored in the paint to make it 4-2. South Shelby looked poised to blow the game opening, scoring six straight points before Valerie Oldham scored. But Kirsten Johnston converted back-to-back fastbreak opportunities. Her third consecutive bucket made it 12-10 but turnovers ended the Scotland County run and allowed the Ladybirds to lead 16-10 at the end of one period of play.
South Shelby took charge of the contest in the second period, going on a 10-0 run to start the quarter and force a Scotland County timeout with 5:53 left in the first half.
The stoppage didnít halt the Ladybirds charge. Cheyenne Wardís jumper with 3:02 on the clock was the lone field goal of the period until Melissa Cotton hit a three pointer to close the first half with SCR-I trailing 30-16.
Cotton started the third period in similar fashion, splashing a shot from behind the arc. But South Shelby answered with more pressure defense that wreaked havoc on the Lady Tigers offense. Numerous turnovers by SCR-I allowed South Shelby to lead 47-23 before Betsey Kittle hit a three pointer. A basket by Kaitlin Caldwell made it 47-28 to close the quarter.
The fourth period was all Ladybirds, as the guests took advantage of the SCR-I hospitality to the tune of a 15-2 run to end the night.
Johnston finished with eight point to lead the Lady Tigers (3-6). Cotton added six. Erin Mayes paced South Shelby with 19 points.
