Boyd T. Croley, 94, of Memphis, MO, passed away early Wednesday morning, November 19, 2008 in the Scotland County Care Center.

He was born March 28, 1914, in rural Scotland County, MO, the son of Tom and Alma Croley. Boyd was raised in Memphis and graduated from high school in 1932.

Boyd is survived by his daughter, Sue Payne, Memphis, MO; son, Tom Croley and wife, Andrea, Springfield, MO; five grandchildren, Kimberly Payne, Naples, FL; Stephanie Deer and husband, Ross, Leawood, KS; Kit Colpitts and husband, Peter, Kansas City, MO; Trevor Croley and wife, Cabrini, Springfield, MO; and Lindsley Withey and husband, Matt, Denver, CO; and six great-grandchildren, Claire and Cooper Croley, Bryn and Brady Deer, Haley Withey and Brodie Colpitts.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Winifred; parents, Tom and Alma Croley; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Arlie Tippett; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Lester Daniels; son-in-law, Phil Payne; and grandson, Andrew Croley.

Boyd spent his life giving to his family, the community and others. During World War II he volunteered for the Navy and was soon assigned to a special division known as the Seabees in Guam. Upon his return to Memphis he joined the VFW in 1947 and eventually became Commander of State for Missouri in 1957.

He spent countless hours volunteering and received numerous awards and certificates of recognition for his leadership and effort on many committees, boards and organizations. These include serving as SCR-1 Board of Education member and president (1952-64), State House of Representative (1965-66), Chairman of Memphis Housing Authority (30+ years), creating and instructing the building trades class at SCR-1 (1970-81); Board of Soil and Water Conservation District (20+ years), Member of Moila, Vice President of Lions Club (1970) and active member of the Christian Church.

He loved his life as a husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time on the farm, traveling with his wife, spending time with his family and playing cards with his friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, Missouri, with Pam Glasgow officiating. Musicians were Ann Luther, organist, and Lori Fulk, soloist. Pallbearers were Joe Fulk, Ivan Good, Dail White, Vernon Tippett, Duane McDonald and John Dodge.

Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, Missouri, with Military Graveside Services by the Wallace W. Gillespie V.F.W. Post #4958.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO.

The family has suggested memorial gifts to the Scotland County Nutrition Center and they may be left or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.
