Phillip Ray Homer, 77, of Glenwood, MO, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO.

The son of Raleigh Bowers and Mary Mariah (Simpson) Homer, he was born July 30, 1931 at the Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, IL.

He grew up in the Berwick, IL area.

On June 25, 1954 in Good Hope, IL, he was united in marriage to Karen Rachel Nelson.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Homer of Glenwood, MO; two sons, Don Shamblin of Prairie City, IL and Timothy Homer of Glenwood, MO; one daughter, Tara Baker and husband, Adam of Memphis, MO; six grandchildren, Karena Barker, Chris Shamblin, Ed Shamblin, Tylar Anders, Jayde Baker and John Lamb; five great-grandchildren, Braden Barker, Kyra Shamblin, Caleb Lamb, Colby Lamb and Kendra Lamb; one sister, Roberta Abel of Osage Beach, MO; nieces, nephews; other family members and many good friends.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jeanne Homer and four brothers, Lewis, Raleigh, Thomas and William Homer.

Phil was a jack of all trades as he had been a contractor, carpenter, insurance salesman, meat cutter, farmer and race car builder but above all he was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Phil and his wife, Karen also opened their home and cared for 35 foster children. His family will certainly treasure the many moments they were able to share with him.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, MO with Sonny Smyser, pastor of the Schuyler County Church of Faith officiating. Music was provided by organist, Maureen Watkins and soloist, Cole Tippett. Special selections were “Daddy’s Hands” and “That’s My Job” by Conway Twitty. Honorary pallbearers were his 35 foster children. Memorials have been established for Glenwood Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Prairie City Cemetery in Prairie City, IL at a later date as the body will be cremated. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, MO.
