Floyd Bennett, 96, formerly of Downing, MO, passed away at the Schuyler County Nursing Home in Queen City, MO, on September 6, 2008, where he had been a resident since 2001.
The son of Phillip Roy and Elma (Sommers) Bennett, he was born north of Downing, MO, on October 24, 1911.
On September 20, 1933 he was united in marriage to Grace Evelyn Neil and to this union one daughter, Shirley was born.
Survivors include his daughter, Shirley Hope and husband, Paul of Ottumwa, IA; two granddaughters, Paula Vaske and husband, Mark of Colorado Springs, CO and Patricia Neal and husband, Chris of Des Moines, IA; three great-grandchildren, Alex Vaske, Ben Vaske and Derrick Neal; one brother, Irvin Bennett and wife, Mary Lou of Downing, MO; nieces; nephews and other family friends.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on September 25, 2001 and one sister, Helen Parks.
Floyd was a grain and livestock farmer north of Downing, MO from 1933 until his health began to fail. He was a member of the Downing Baptist Church in Downing, MO and was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #380 AF & AM of Queen City, MO from where he received his 50 year pin. Floyd enjoyed playing the violin for many years at nursing homes and senior citizens in the local areas.
Funeral services were held on September 9, 2008 at the Downing Baptist Church in Downing, MO with David Barton, pastor of the Downing Baptist Church officiating. Music will be provided by Twila Matthews, pianist. Pallbearers were Joe Farley, Charles Comstock, Larry Aeschliman, Ellis Speer, Vaughn Fogle, and Jeff Bennett. Honorary pallbearers were Mark Vaske, Chris Neal and Tom Farley. Memorials have been established for the Pleasant Grove Cemetery or Downing Baptist Church. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, north of Downing, MO. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster and Downing, MO.
