JAMES “HOWARD” BURNS
(9/21/1918 – 3/31/2008)



James “Howard” Burns was born on September 21, 1918, in Downing, MO, the son of Roy W. and Osa J. (Black) Burns.

He graduated from the Downing High School in Downing, MO.

He was united in marriage to Opal Marie McCloskey on August 13, 1940, in Davenport, IA.

The couple resided and farmed in the Alburnett, Marion, and Quasqueton, IA, prior to settling in Rowley, IA in 1973. Following the death of this wife, Opal in 2003 Howard moved to Independence, IA.

Howard died March 31, 2008, at West Village Care Center in Independence, IA, following a short illness.

He is survived by two sons, Jim (Wanita) Burns of Winthrop, IA, Dick (Betty) Burns of Maxwell, IA; son-in-law, Neil Strong of Moneta, VA; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Beverly (Milan) Aschbrenner of Moneta, VA; and three brothers, David (Shirley) Burns of Maquoketa, IA, Clark (Shirley) Burns of Oxford, IA, and Kenneth Burns of Maquoketa, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Opal in 2003; a daughter, Carolyn Strong in 2006; a sister, Lavaugh Hope; and a brother, Clarence R. Burns.

Funeral services were held April 5, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church, Rowley, IA, with Rev. Sheri Anderson officiating. Music was by Robin Grover, soloist, and Linda Saunders, organist. Honorary casket bearers were Jim Fordyce, Morris Greenley, Don Gunningham, Rusty Kraklio, and Jackson Sperry. Casket bearers were Jared Bathen, Jordan Bathen, Larry Bathen, Matt Burns, Cory Haight, and Alex McCaslin. Burial was in the Wilson Cemetery, Independence, IA.
