TWILA MAE KAPFER
(1/23/1917 – 12/26/2007)
Twila Mae Kapfer, 90, Sun City, AZ, formerly of rural Wyaconda, MO, passed away December 26. 2007, in Youngtown, AZ.
She was born the daughter of Otto and Ollie (Grubb) Clatt on January 23, 1917 in her parents’ home in rural Scotland County near Wyaconda, MO.
Twila graduated from Narrow Grove country school and Wyaconda High School. She lived on a farm until 1995 when she and her husband moved to Sun City, AZ.
She married Wendell Bondurant Kapfer on March 25, 1939. To this union were born four children, Sandra, Gary, Dennis and Terry. Twila and her husband started their life together on their farm northeast of Wyaconda, MO and worked the land for 56 years.
Twila gave her heart to the Lord when she was a young girl at a tent revival in Fairmont, MO. She attended the Methodist Church in Fairmont until she was married. She followed her Lord into baptism September 9, 1944, at the Wyaconda Baptist Church and remained an active member there until she moved from their farm. She served as a teacher in Vacation Bible School all the years her children were growing up, and she was president of the Women’s Missionary Union for thirteen years (1969-1982). Twila and her husband were active members in the Gideon Bible Society for several years. When she and her husband moved to Sun City, AZ she moved her church membership to the Sun City Baptist Church. Twila loved cooking, baking and handwork. Her embroidery work and quilting were impeccable. She made special quilts for all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Twila baked and decorated wedding cakes for her children and for special occasions for neighbors in her community. She exemplified the characteristics of the fruit of the Spirit in Gal. 5:22-23: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Twila was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Ollie (Grubb) Clatt; her husband, Wendell Kapfer; one sister, Thelma Doris (Clatt) Cloud; four brothers-in-law, Eldon Dice, Bill Kapfer, Walter Francisco, and Bill Cloud.
She is survived by four children and their spouses, Sandra (Kapfer) Carter and her husband, Merlyn of Sun City, AZ, Gary Kapfer and his wife, Linda of Scottsdale, AZ, Dennis Kapfer and his wife, Nancy of Prescott, AZ, and Terry (Kapfer) Sommers and her husband, Carl of Arbela, MO. Nine grandchildren, Randy Carter and his wife, Stella of Magnolia Springs, AL, Ricky Carter and his wife, Linda of Kirksville, MO, Rhonda (Carter) Beal of Phoenix, AZ, Kolette (Kapfer) Abel and husband, Pat of Phoenix, AZ, Heidi (Kapfer) Day and her husband, Bryan of Scottsdale, AZ, Peppa Kapfer of Pismo Beach, CA, Kory Kapfer and his wife, Misty of Phoenix, AZ, Kalonni (Sommers) Porter and her husband, Paul of VanMeter, IA, and Neil Sommers and his wife, Susie of Leawood, KS; Fifteen great-grandchildren, Tabitha Carter, Melissa and Whitney Carter, Travis Beal, Robert and Hanna Abel, Samantha, Harrison, and Winston Day, Noah Kapfer, Jacob, Justin and Elijah Porter, Olivia and Twila’s namesake, Sophie Mae Sommers. One sister, Ruby (Clatt) Francisco of Olympia, WA; Two sisters-in-law, Edna Mae (Alderton) Kapfer of Mesa, AZ and Ann (Kapfer) Dice of Quincy, IL; several nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial service for Twila Mae Kapfer will be held in Sun City, AZ. A private burial service will be held at a later date in the Wyaconda Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideon Bible Society or to the Wyaconda Cemetery.
