Jerry Lynn Garrett, 60, of Memphis, MO, passed away June 17, 2008 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, IA, after a brief battle with cancer.

Jerry was a lifelong resident of Memphis, MO, born July 28, 1947 in Keokuk, IA. He was raised in Memphis by his parents, William (Mansel) and Hildred Cross Garrett.

Jerry graduated from Memphis High School in 1965 and started his career as a semi truck driver, most recently at Richers Trucking in Wever, IA. Jerry enjoyed Nascar and sprint car racing, discovering new restaurants, and spoiling his great-niece and nephews.

Surviving relatives include his sister, Sharon Hicks (Paul) of Des Moines, IA and Aunt Betty (Richard) Napier of Mineola, TX. Other surviving relatives include his niece, Tonya Jansen; his nephew, Eric (Amy) Blesie; his nephew, Eric Hicks; great-niece, Kendall Jansen; great-nephews, Ethan and Carson Blesie.

Jerry was preceded in death by both of his parents and grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jerry’s name may be made to the Taylor House Hospice or Scotland County Cancer Fund and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison St., Memphis, MO 63555.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 19, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the Memphis Cemetery, with Brother Jack Sumption officiating. Jerry’s wishes were that all of his friends and family gather at Keith’s Café in Memphis, MO to celebrate his life. Family will be gathered there at 11:00 a.m. before moving to the cemetery for the service. All who wish to join in are warmly welcomed. Arrangements were handled by the Payne Chapel, Memphis, MO.
