Fitness Center Offering Programs for Healthy New Year’s Resolutions
Are you ready to kick your unhealthy habits and truly make a New Year’s resolution you can accomplish? The Scotland County Community Fitness Center, the Scotland County Health Department and The Missouri Foundation for Health are working together to offer a support group to help you stay on course. You may choose to “Walk to Branson” and/or “BLOG” at the Scotland County Community Fitness Center starting on Thursday, January 8, 2009.
The Scotland County Health Department, with the support of the Missouri Foundation for Health will again be offering their Walk to Branson to the general public - free of charge. This 12-week program is designed to track walker’s miles through the use of a pedometer on a weekly basis, with the distance being equal to walking to Branson, MO.
Each Thursday participants will report miles walked that week to a representative of the Health Department and be able to walk one mile free of charge (no membership required for this time period only) on the indoor track at the Fitness Center. At the end of the 12-week program, those that have walked the entire distance to Branson will be entered into the drawing for a free six-month individual membership to the Fitness Center.
“Come join us in the fight against heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and colon cancer,’ said Laurie Jack of the Health Department. “Exercise and a healthy diet are two of the best ways to protect yourself against many chronic diseases.”
Prior to the kick-off meeting on January 8, participants are asked to please contact the Health Department at 660-465-7275 to sign up and make arrangements to get a pedometer. At that time the participant’s stride will be calculated. The walkers will meet weekly at 5:30 p.m. at the Fitness Center to walk one mile and tally weekly steps. Trip progress will be displayed on the Missouri map wall at the Fitness Center. It is 347 miles to Branson. That’s a little over 4 miles a day or approximately 8,260 steps a day depending on the walker’s stride.
“We should all strive for 10,000 steps a day,” said fitness center board member Suzie Lister. “You’ll be surprised how the steps add up. Wear your pedometer all day long. You can do this.”
The Scotland County Community Fitness Center, with the support of the Health Department and Missouri Foundation will also be offering you a chance to participate in our own “BLOG” (Biggest Loser’s Own Gain).
This plan will be offered to the general public, but will have a $10 entry fee for the 12-week program. BLOG will be offered as a team concept. You may choose your own group of three members or come individually and be assigned to a randomly selected group. Weekly weights will be recorded by a confidential weigh-in on each Thursday evening and percentage of weight loss will be tracked, both individually and per team.
At the end of the 12-week period, the team with the biggest percentage of weight loss will receive the grand cash prize (to be determined based on entrants).
“Our goal is to offer a healthy, weight responsibility program through your choice of one or both of the above mentioned programs,” said program coordinator Laurie Jack of the health department. “The key to a healthy lifestyle involves diet (food choice) and exercise. Each week, handouts will be available offering you incentives to stay the course such as recipes, exercise ideas, nutrition facts or general health programs along with random incentives.”
