Going The Extra Mile
Students at the Scotland County R-I Elementary School are going the extra mile to come to the aid of two classmates who lost all of their belongings when a fire destroyed their home in Granger on December 4th.
Classmates of Caleb and Justin Girardin, students in second and sixth grade at SCR-I, went into action the following day at school, organizing a fund raising effort to aid their friends. The students decided to go the extra mile, literally, trying to raise a mile’s length of pennies, or the equivalent of around $880.
Sixth grade students in Mr. Berkowitz’s and Mrs. Pinson’s classrooms hosted a booth at the annual Christmas Bazaar held Saturday at the High School. Donors helped the group raise more than $1,200 for the family.
Students will be performing a similar service at the school’s Christmas music program December 11th.
Students will continue with their efforts to go the extra mile as well, attempting to raise the $880 amongst themselves for their classmates.
Counselor Dani Fromm noted that in addition to the financial gifts, students have been providing donations of toys, books and clothing to their classmates.
“With us all helping out a little, we can help others a lot,” said Fromm. “These kids were beating down my door Friday morning with ideas about helping their friends in need. I’m so proud of them.”
