Citizens Continue to Bark About Citys Dog Pound

Just months after once again altering the Memphis animal control policy, the Memphis City Council was addressing dog issues again at the November 6th meeting.

In September, the council agreed to adjust the animal control ordinances to allow unclaimed canines confined in the citys dog pound beyond the mandates waiting period to be transported to the Kirksville Humane Society for possible adoption.

The move was made after public outcry was voiced to council members regarding the citys policy of euthanizing unclaimed animals.

However two months after the change, the public outcry has apparently dried up, as the volunteers for transporting the animals are not coming forward as originally promised.

Currently there are six dogs housed in the pound, with four of those animals having been impounded for three weeks or longer awaiting transport to the Humane Society.

No one is in a hurry to put these animals down, as can be seen by the citys patience in waiting for the volunteers to materialize, said Mayor William Reckenberg. However at some point we have to move forward.

Reckenberg informed the council that he had preliminary discussions with a prospective volunteer to transport the animals.

I was under the impression when we made this change two months ago that there were several people willing to provide this service, stated Alderman Chris Feeney. I would encourage those interested in this process to join together and possibly model themselves after other animal rescue groups that provide similar services in other communities.

Anyone interested in volunteering to transport dogs from the Memphis pound to the Kirksville Humane Society is asked to contact Memphis City Hall to be placed on the call list.

Under the Department of Natural resources permitting process, the City is only licensed as a pound, and can not provide animal shelter services, which includes public adoption.
