Iowa Teen Apprehended Following Repeat Escape Performance

Faced with the prospects of a four-year sentence in the Department of Corrections for his first offense, an Iowa teen escaped from local enforcement officers in Memphis on Thursday, September 4th.

The ensuing manhunt lasted nearly four hours before Anthony M. Koehlhoeffer, 18, was apprehended just outside of Memphis.

Earlier in the day Koehlhoeffer had been transported from Jefferson County, IA, to Memphis by Scotland County Sheriffs Department officers for a probation/parole violation warrant.

Koehlhoeffer was on probation stemming from a July 2, 2007 incident in which the Iowa teen had fled from custody in Memphis after being arrested on suspicion of forcible sexual contact with a 13-year-old female. Ultimately those charges were dropped and he pled guilty to Class D felony charge of escape from custody. He was sentenced to four years in the Missouri Department of Corrections, but the execution of the sentence was suspended and he was placed on five years probation.

At approximately 1:45 p.m. Koehlhoeffer, fled from the sheriffs office, where he was waiting to be booked on the warrant.

Witnesses reported seeing him crossing Highway 15 near the Missouri Street intersection, heading northwest. Officers from the sheriffs department, the Memphis Police Department, the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Missouri State Highway Patrol converged on the area, but the suspect could not be located.

A second siting placed the fugitive near the Scotland County Livestock Market. At this time, law enforcement officials notified the neighboring Scotland County R-I schools of the situation, and the district went into lock down mode at approximately 2:00 p.m.

Officers monitored the school during the manhunt and at 3:10 p.m. when school buses began loading, officers were present in the loading area and also provided the adjoining bus route with police escorts to insure all children were safe on their return home.

Koehlhoeffer was spotted on the school grounds, and officers pursued him at the elementary school softball field and through the adjoining walking trail near the SCR-I bus barn.

At 5:38 p.m. Koehlhoeffer was taken into custody after an auxiliary sheriffs department officer apprehended him in the driveway of a private residence in the residential area being developed by the school district on the north edge of Memphis.

Koehlhoeffer is being held without bail in the Scotland County Jail. Charges are pending.
