Community Mourns Loss of High School Principal

Just days prior to the start of the 2008-09 school year, residents of the Scotland County R-I School District are mourning the loss of high school principal Ken Cross.

Funeral services for the long-time educator were hosted in the high school gymnasium on Sunday, August 17th. Current and past students, faculty and staff members gathered for the event.

Cross died August 15th at his home in rural Scotland County.

At 8:43 a.m. the Scotland County Ambulance Service was notified of a medical emergency at the Cross residence at RR 1, Box 129B.

The ambulance service and the Scotland County Sheriffs Department responded to the home off of Route MM, south and east of Memphis.

Upon arrival at the scene the first responders determined that Cross was deceased.

Scotland County coroner Ginny Monroe was notified and upon arrival at the scene, pronounced Cross dead at 9:20 a.m.

The death was investigated by the Scotland County Coroners office and the Scotland County Sheriffs Department. The manor of death has been determined to be suicide.

Kenneth Ray Cross, 53, of Memphis, had served as Scotland County R-I High School principal since 2005. Prior to that he has served as the schools athletic director, and in a number of other instructional roles in nearly 30 years with the district.

Counselors were on hand Monday, August 18th at Scotland County R-I high school to meet with faculty and staff members to help them cope with the loss and to be prepared to assist students in a similar manner.

The start of the 2008-09 school year was moved back one day.

Classes will begin Thursday, August 21st. Classes will be dismissed at 1:05 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Counselors will be on hand Thursday and Friday to meet with students.

The SCR-I Board of Education held special meetings August 15th, 18th and 19th. Former Clark County principal Gary Gordy was hired to fill the vacancy, begining work at SCR-I on August 20th.
