Denis Clatt, Chipper Harris Secure Ballot Spots For November Election

The November general election ballots took shape on Tuesday night, but only 29% of the 3,122 registered voters in Scotland County had a say in who will be on the ballots.

Scotland County Clerk Betty Lodewegen reported a total of 898 ballots were cast on August 5th on the Republican, Democrat or Libertarian ballots.

The Eastern District Commissioner race took final form as the field of six candidates was narrowed to just two. Republicans elected Denis Clatt while the Democrats gave the nod to Chipper Harris. They will square off with independent candidate Scott Westhoff for the seat being vacated by Winn Hill.

Clatt bested James David Parker by a final margin of 228 to 50. Harris led the crowded field on the Democratic ticket. He earned 101 votes to defeat Steve Snodgrass (44), Chris Montgomery (41) and Jason Moss (40).

The commissioner race was the lone local contest on the ballot, earning the blame from election officials for the relatively low voter turnout.

A pair of fairly contested races for the United States Congress 9th District seat werent enough to boost those totals despite the fact that more than half of the nine candidates on the two party tickets visited Scotland County during the campaign.

Both races went down to the wire locally.

On the Republican side it was Blaine Luetkemeyer and Dr. Bob Onder neck-and-neck to the finish line with both candidates earning 146 votes. Brock Olivo received 65 votes followed by Danie Moore with 35 and Dan Bishir with 13.

Representative Judy Baker took the majority of Democrat votes for the congressional seat. She narrowly edged Steve Gaw for the top local tally by a margin of 185 to 159. Lydon Bode earned 42 votes followed by Ken Jacob with 20.

The former owner of the congressional seat, Kenny Hulshof was the easy winner in the Republican gubernatorial race locally. He topped Sarah Steelman by a 389-27 margin.

The other race on the Republican ticket saw Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder get 263 votes compared to just 74 for Paul Douglas Sims and 24 for Arthur Hodge, Sr.

On the Democratic ticket there were a couple highly contested fights.

Mark Powell got the nod in Scotland County for treasurer, earning 155 votes. Andria Simckes received 78 votes with Clint Zweifel getting 68 and Charles Wheeler earning 52.

Jeff Harris was the top vote getter for attorney general. His name was marked on 137 local ballots compared to 99 votes for Chris Koster, 90 for Margaret Donnelly and 38 for Molly Williams.

A total of 454 Republican ballots were cast while 441 Democrats ballots were submitted and three Libertarian ballots were cast.

Local voters backed attorney general Jay Nixon on the Democratic governor ballot. He received 361 votes to 47 for Daniel Carroll.

Sam Page topped the partys lieutenant governor ballot. He got 164 votes to 51 for Becky Plattner, 47 for Mary Williams, 43 for Michael Carter, 30 for Richard Tolbert and 15 for C. Lillian Metzger.
