Trail of Stolen Coins Leads Police to Burglary Suspect

It wasnt a trail of breadcrumbs, but an Iowa man is under arrest for a pair of burglaries in Memphis after he attempted to exchange a number of collectible coins at a Keokuk, Iowa bank this week.

According to the Memphis Police Department, an arrest was made in the case of a pair of burglaries that occurred in Memphis late in the evening of July 9th.

The identity of the suspect has not been released as of press time.

An individual is in custody following the arrest made July 14th in Lee County, Iowa.

Investigators were alerted to the suspect after a Keokuk, Iowa bank reported some unusual coins being cashed in. The coins turned out to be from the collection of Dick Middleton, which was stolen from Memphis Lumber last week. The suspect was identified from the banks video security system.

In all the burglar(s) took approximately 50 sets of the United States state quarters as well as several silver dollars and other coins valued at roughly $2,000. Several flashlights and utility knives were also taken from the store. These items reportedly were located at the suspects residence, along with items taken from Hopkins Lumber in Memphis on the same night in question.

The burglar(s) pried the front door open at Memphis Lumber. Entry was gained at Hopkins Lumber by kicking the front door open.

Approximately $150 in cash and coins was taken from Hopkins Lumber as well as several padlocks.

Investigators indicated stolen property was located at the residence that linked the suspect to the two burglaries in Memphis as well as others that occurred in Clark County recently.
