Republican Congressional Candidates Visit Fair

A pair of Republican candidates for United States Congress paid visits to the Scotland County fair last week after touring the flood-ravaged regions of the state along the Mississippi River where they joined forces with the National Guard and other volunteers in sand-bagging efforts along the flood-swollen river.

Brock Olivo made his second stop in Memphis, following up a day trip earlier this spring. The former NFL running back visited with prospective constituents at the Scotland County Fair on the evening of June 17th. He had been a guest of the Scotland County Rotary Club during the groups lunch meeting when he outlined some of his campaign platform for members.

I spent many hours last week working in flood relief efforts and learning from the people who actually live in the affected areas, Olivo said. I did so without drawing attention to myself or my campaign because it was the right thing to do. Being able to talk to fellow rescuers over a pair of shovels provided me with an insight that you may not have seen in the national drive-by media reports. As one gentleman told me, The river is going to run where it wants, but we should do a better job of guiding it.

The candidate stated he believes it is unacceptable that a second natural disaster of this degree has besieged the river basin, just 15 years after the Great Flood of 1993, which should have led to a better levee system.

Whether it is our town of Louisiana, Missouri, or the state of Louisiana, we have to take action. All levees should be built to withstand 500-year flood levels, Olivo said. All private landowners should be compensated for their losses due to this inaction and for property that would need to be used to build a better system of protection. Be it the broken levee system, the broken healthcare delivery system, or their out of control spending habits, many in Washington, D.C. would rather talk and debate than take action.

Olivo grew up in Herman where he led the Francis Borgia Regional High School in Washington, MO, to a state football title in 1993. He went on to star for the University of Missouri where his #27 jersey was retired before he played for the Detroit Lions in the NFL for five years. After retiring Brock moved to Washington D.C. and began working for The National Italian American Foundation where he was a program manager for the Culture and Education department, designing and coordinating programs that promoted and preserved the Italian culture in America. He also served as assistant liaison between the NIAF and Italian business and congressional figures, working to strengthen the rapport between Italy and the United States.

After marrying his wife Samuela, who is from Italy, he moved to Bologna, Italy where he founded Olivo Consulting, which fostered business and trade relationships between small and medium size American and Italian manufacturers.

Just two evenings later the Scotland County Fair hosted a second Republican candidate for the 9th District Seat in the United States House of Representatives formerly held by gubernatorial candidate Kenny Hulshof.

Dr. Bob Onder followed a similar route to Memphis as he also visited the neighboring counties to the east to witness the devastation of the Flood of 2008.

The District 13 State Representative met with citizens of northeast Missouri and helped in their fight to protect homes and businesses from a raging Mississippi River.

Its disheartening to see the devastation caused by this river, said Dr. Onder. But its inspiring to see the great people of Canton and other communities here pull together in a time of great need.

As a member of Congress, the people of the Ninth District can be confident that Ill fight to ensure that we get the resources to make our levees even stronger, Onder continued. And when these unfortunate natural disasters occur, Ill fight for the federal resources to get us back on our feet as quickly as possible.

Dr. Onder visited Kahoka, Alexandria, Canton, LaGrange, and West Quincy. At each stop, he had the chance to listen to concerns of the people.

The following evening he was a guest at a special reception at The Willows Lakehouse near Downing hosted by Dr. Randy and Heleine Tobler and former state representative Bob Behnen.

Prior to the dinner, Onder visited with prospective constituents at the Scotland County fairgrounds.

Dr. Onder, who owns and operates a medical practice in St. Charles, is also a licensed attorney in the state of Missouri. He and his wife Allison have six children. Dr. Onder was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2006 to serve St. Charles and Warren counties.

I want to take my record of proven results for Missouri and my life experience as a family man, a doctor, a small businessman and a state legislator to Washington and tackle the major issues of the day, Onder said. I will make you this promise right now. I will always oppose amnesty for illegal aliens, fight for the rights of the unborn, and not only keep the tax burden as low as possible on Missouri families, but vote against out of control spending.
