Rising Food Prices Cause School Lunch Cost Hike

Faced with rising food costs the Scotland County R-I Board of Education approved 10 to 15 cent price increases in the districts breakfast and lunch programs.

Student breakfasts will increase from $1.05 to $1.15 next year. Adult breakfast costs will also increase a dime to $1.40.

Lunch prices at the junior high and high school will jump from $1.45 to $1.60 while adult lunches will go up to $2.00 at the high school. Student lunch costs at the elementary school will increase 10 cents to $1.50.

The board made the move after accepting the bread service bid from Wonder Hostess and awarding the milk contract to Prairie Farms. Sara Lee also submitted a bid for the bread service, but long-time provider Anderson Erickson will no longer offer milk services in the region and thus did not bid on the contract for the 2008-09 school year.

The price of a carton of 1% milk will increase from 18 cents to 24.5 cents. The bread price per loaf went up from 97 cents last year to $1.20 on the current deal.

“Those are just two examples,” stated Superintendent Dave Shalley. “We are seeing similar price increases on nearly everything for the breakfast and lunch programs making this move necessary.”
