Election Results Dominate April City Council Meeting

The recent election dominated the agenda of the April 10th meeting of the Memphis City Council.

The election results were officially certified by city clerk Angela Newman.

Mayor Roger Gosney opened the proceedings but turned the meeting over to mayor elect William Reckenberg, after the former east ward alderman was sworn in along with recently re-elected aldermen James Parker and Chris Feeney.

The council was joined by several citizens present in the meeting thanking Gosney for his leadership of the city over the past two years.

With the election of Reckenberg to the mayor position, the council will now turn its attention to filling his remaining one-year term as east ward alderman.

The city is asking interested individuals to submit a letter to city hall stating their intent to seek the appointment. The deadline for the correspondence is April 25th. The council will consider prospective candidates at the May meeting when the Mayor could make a recommendation for council consideration.

Alderman Parker also discussed a voting error that he stated ultimately ďdisenfranchisedĒ a pair of city residents.

ďTwo of our constituents were turned away at the polls, when they should not have been,Ē he stated referring to a voter registration error that kept two city residents from casting their ballots on municipal issues.

ďThere is no way now to fix it short of suing the county clerk and asking for the election to be redone, and I donít believe any of the parties involved feel this is in their best interest,Ē Parker said. ďBut what I would ask is for the city to know who its citizens are.Ē

The issue arose regarding a property that lies on the city limits, with a portion of the home in both the city and the county.

Alderman Feeney suggested the city work with the county clerk and the county assessor to decide on a consistent map that could be used by all entities to insure this situation did not occur again.
