Building Permit Approved for New Pharmacy Site

While one building on the Memphis City Square is being prepared for new occupants another site appears likely to be vacated by its current tenants.

Vernon Bennet of Vern Bennett Enterprises announced at the March 6th meeting of the Memphis City Council that he purchased the former Missourianna building on the southeast corner of the Memphis square.

Bennett and a foreman for his construction company met with the council to discuss plans of renovating the building, which had been a subject of previous council meetings doing to its deteriorating condition.

As we considered this venture, we had a structural engineer review the facility and he told us it would be a shame to destroy this building, Bennett told the council.

The businessman stated he will turn the three-story structure into an upper scale apartment complex, with the upper two stories housing single, flat-style apartments. An elevator will be installed in the facility, with access planned in lobby area to be located at the main entrance. Beyond that common area, Bennett said he will construct two or three smaller rental units on the main floor.

Its amazing, weve only been working on this for a few days, and my phone has already been ringing with calls from potential renters that are excited about the project, Bennett told the council.

But while this proposed project is poised to fill one vacant building on the city square, another opening appears likely in the near future.

Planning and zoning coordinator William Reckenberg presented a building permit from Scotland County Pharmacy for a proposed new facility to be located west of Pamida.

The plans called for a larger facility with expanded parking opportunities as well as a drive-thru window for customers.

The building permit had been approved by Reckenberg, but was presented to the council for review due to the size of the project.

I hate to see it leave the square, but Im pleased to see the progress that is being made and the expanded opportunities this new facility will offer the pharmacy, Reckenberg told the council.
