Busy 48 Hours for Fire Department

After a slow two months to start 2008, the Scotland County Fire Department answered four emergency calls in a 48-hour period last week.

The spring grass fire season started Thursday, March 7th when the fire department was dispatched to the Jerry Reese, Jr., property at 12:15 p.m. Seven volunteers took three fire trucks to the property located south of Memphis on Highway 15. Approximately eight acres of CRP burned from the fire that was ignited by sparks from trash burned the previous day.

The blaze was quickly doused. The fire department was on the scene for approximately 30 minutes.

The following day the department responded to a grass fire at the Mark Myers residence south of Memphis where a controlled burn jumped the fire breaks and spread to a neighboring farm.

The fire crews were dispatched to the scene at 2:50 p.m. The fire destroyed approximately 10 acres before it was brought under control.

At 5:11 p.m. the fire department was called to property owned by Dr. Larry Wiggins on Route D where a truck had caught fire. Firemen extinguished the vehicle fire but it was a total loss. The firemen were on the scene for 25 minutes.

The third emergency service call of the day occurred at 10:45 p.m. when the fire and rescue squad was summoned to a one vehicle crash on Highway 136 two miles east of Downing.
