Clock Restoration Project Slowed By Grant Denial

With requests for funding in excess of $2.3 million and just $500,000 available, the Missouri Heritage Properties Grant had some bad news for Scotland County last week.

Director Mark Miles informed the Scotland County Court House Clock restoration group that it was not selected for funding in the latest round of grants awarded by the entity.

Miles indicated the lack of funding only allowed the program to approve 12 of the 39 grant applications received.

Local committee member Kathy Kiddoo noted that Miles did offer encouragement for the local effort, noting that funding is being sought to allow a second round of grant awards later this year. The governors current proposed budget includes funds for this purpose, and with the number of grant applications that were received, there obviously is documented need for the aid.

Local boosters of the clock restoration efforts were disappointed by the news, but pointed to the successful local fund raising efforts as a key in completing the proposed renovations at the Scotland County Courthouse to preserve the history of the facilitys time piece located atop the county seat.

With one third of the projected cost of the project already raised by local donations, we feel there is enough interest and community support for the project to help us see it through to fruition, Kiddoo said.

She added that plans were discussed for future fund raising efforts during the committees February 19th meeting. The group also laid the groundwork for reapplying for the grant in the spring.

Contractor Rory DeMesy was contacted by the committee and pledged to maintain his current bid estimate for the work if the group is able to receive the grant this spring. DeMesy of Mechanical Watch Supply, LLC of Minneapolis, MN, has reviewed the site and has been integral in preparing the renovation plans.
