Angel Food Ministries Here to Help Needy
The fight against hunger has a new ally. Once a month local residents can receive donated food items from the Scotland County Food Pantry. Now residents will have a new tool to help stretch their food buying dollars.
Angel Food Ministries is a nationwide ministry that offers quality, frozen meats and name-brand vegetables at a reduced cost. Angel Food Ministries has recently become available in this region under the care of the First Baptist Church of Kirksville.
The food ministry itself is not affiliated with any one denomination, but the process of ordering, delivery and distribution is more easily managed by a group such as a local church. The ministry is currently being offered here in Memphis.
Orders are made monthly. The food available changes monthly and menus are posted for each month. The standard parcel, estimated to be about a $70 dollar value, consists primarily of frozen meats and vegetables at a cost of $30 dollars, which can be paid in cash or food stamps.
There are no income restrictions and no obligation to order every month.
“Each month you may make your decision based on the menu items,” said local organizer Pam Shotts. “Orders for the March parcel must be in by March 1st and will be ready for pick up in Memphis on Saturday March 15th.”
Angel Food Ministries, a non-profit, non-denominational organization, began in 1994 as a small outreach ministry serving a rural community in Georgia. The goal was to help neighbors who needed a hand up in a tough economic time. Today, Angel Food Ministries can be found in over 3,200 communities in 35 states and helps feed over 500,000 families a month.
Angel Food partners with churches and community organizations throughout the country to help distribute food to those in need.
The March menu consists of 1.5 lb. Top Sirloin Roast; 2 lb. IQF Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast; 1.5 lb. Boneless Pork Fillet; 2 lb. Breaded Chicken Breast Strips; 1.5 lb. Boxed Lean Beef Patties; 4 lb. IQF Chicken Leg Quarters; 16 oz. All Meat Bologna; 16 oz. Ground Turkey; 24 oz. Steak-Cut French Fries; 16 oz. Frozen Mixed Vegetables; 16 oz.
