Fair Board Still Seeking Promoter for Race Track

The future of the Scotland County Speedway remains up in the air after no new promoter was hired at the January 9th meeting of the Scotland County Fair Board.

No new promoter was hired because no new promoter has expressed interest in continuing the weekly racing show at the facility located just west of Memphis.

“We haven’t hired a new promoter because we haven’t been able to find anyone to officially express interest in running the show,” said fair board vice president David Jackson. “We are still actively pursuing a deal that will insure that we continue to have a weekly racing program on our track.”

Two different groups were present at the January meeting with proposals to do special races through out the season but no promoter expressed interest in the weekly show.

Last year the fair board received $600 per week in rent for the track as well as an additional $500 per race in an agreement with then promoter RL Promotions as part of the funding for the new lights the fair board installed at the track.

Jackson noted that fair board still holds out hope that a promoter can be found, noting that basically the entire track staff remains intact.

“Except for the track preparation equipment, all we are looking for is the head honcho to run the show and sign his or her name to the deal as the track promoter,” Jackson said.

A special meeting has been scheduled for 7:00 p.m. January 17th at the NEMO RPC building in Memphis.

Prior to going to the weekly schedule, the fair board had originally promoted the track itself, sponsoring special events throughout the year. Jackson noted this is still a possibility, but added that the fair board will need help from the community.

He added that there currently are several openings on the fair board. Anyone interested in joining the fair board is asked to contact current board members Jackson, Phil Aylward, Dana Hauk, Kevin Eggleston or Ryan Clark, or attend the next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, February 13th.

“I’m sure the race track will be the main topic of discussion at this meeting, but I sure hope that we can get something done before then,” Jackson said.
