Tigers Best Bevier Without Services of Top Scorer

After graduating more than 30 points a game, the Scotland County boys basketball team knew it was going to have to replace lots of scoring in 2007-08. That task proved even more difficult in the teamís season opener, as the Tigers took on Bevier minus the services of the teamís lone returning double-digit points producer.

SCR-I seeded third in the Novinger Tournament, went into Tuesday nightís contest versus the Wildcats with Musgrove on the bench, serving a game and a half suspension for school rules violations.

As expected, the Tigers came out of the gates slowly on offense, allowing Bevier to jump ahead 11-2 midway through the first period.

Travis Trueblood scored six points to close the opening quarter, including a three pointer at the buzzer but Bevier still led 18-8.

The deficit remained in double digits as the two squads traded buckets in the second period. Poor free throw shooting by SCR-I kept the scoring output down as the Tigers made just two of 11 from the charity stripe in the first half. That combined with several turnovers kept SCR-I behind 27-16 at the break.

Scotland County clawed its way back into the contest in the third quarter. Trueblood opened the second half with back-to-back buckets. A basket by Kyle Shelly followed by a driving score from Andrew Duley forced a Bevier timeout.

The Wildcats answered the run and returned the margin to double figures 35-25 with 4:20 on the clock.

SCR-I answered with six straight points to make it 35-31 with 2:40. Brandon Garnett and Duley scored in the paint before Trueblood hit a jumper to pull the Tigers too within four points.

But the senior guard was forced to the bench with his fourth foul taking some of the steam out of Scotland Countyís rally.

The Tigers got to within two points on a bucket from Garnett before Bevier pushed the margin to double digits once again.

Joe Spurgeon scored on an offensive rebound and Duley made two free throws to close out the third quarter with the Tigers down 43-37.

Trueblood came off the bench a minute into the fourth quarter and immediately knocked down a long jumper from the wing. A layup by Duley made it 43-41 with 6:12 left to play.

Treublood fouled out with 5:46 on the clock, but the young SCR-I guards kept the momentum on the Tigers side.

Duley tied the game at 45-45 with a three pointer from the top of the key with 2:15 to go.

The junior then made two clutch free throws with seconds left in the contest to push the Tigers ahead 47-45.

Bevier had a chance to tie the game with a pair of free throws with just ticks left on the clock. But the Wildcats converted just one of two to allow SCR-I to escape with the 47-46 win.

Trueblood led all scorers with a career-high 18 points. Duley finished with 14 points while Kyle Shelley
