Softball Season Comes to a Close With 6-4 Loss In District Opener
A late rally ended just short for the Scotland County softball team as the Lady Tigers fought to extend their season on October 3rd.
SCR-I fell behind Clark County 4-0 in the opening round of the Class 2 District 12 tournament hosted by Schuyler County.
Kelly Lister, in just her second game back following a hand injury, blanked Clark County over the first two frames.
SCR-I missed an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the third inning. Lacey Jack led off with a double. A passed ball allowed her to move to third, but she was gunned down at the plate when she attempted to score on a wild pitch.
The Indians jumped on top in the third inning. The first four batters reached base in the frame, courtesy of a base hit, a walk and two SCR-I fielding miscues.
Scotland County came right back to make it 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Valerie Oldham started the frame with a double. She scored on a base hit by Deidra Dochterman. Andrea Shelley delivered an RBI double to trim the deficit to two runs.
Clark County took both tallies right back in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of a leadoff walk en route to two runs to make it 6-2.
SCR-I looked poised to take the momentum back courtesy of a two-out rally in the fifth inning. Tara Matlock started things rolling with a base hit. Base knocks by Kirsten Johnston and Oldham loaded the bases for Dochterman. She delivered a single to plate both Matlock and Johnston and make it 6-4. But SCR-I stranded two runners in scoring position.
That proved to be the Lady Tigers final shot, as the SCR-I offense was retired in order in the final two innings to allow Clark County to advance to the district semifinals.
SCR-I ended the year with a 7-16 record. Clark County advanced to take on top seeded Putnam County. In the bottom of the bracket, #3 seeded Highland defeated Milan in the other opening round contest. The semifinals saw Putnam County and Schuyler County prevail, with the Midgets claiming yet another District title with a 3-2 win over the Rams.
