Fielding Miscues Cost SCR-I in Softball Season Opener
A number of miscues proved costly for the Scotland County varsity softball team as the Lady Tigers dropped their season opener 4-2 to Highland at Johnson Park in Memphis on August 20th.
Highland took advantage of four SCR-I errors to score three unearned runs off sophomore starter Kelly Lister.
Highland jumped out in front 1-0 in the top of the first inning against SCR-Iís new starter in her first varsity pitching appearance.
But Lister settled down to get out of the opening frame and blanked Highland in the Cougars second at bat.
The home squad tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Deidra Dochterman led off the inning with a double. She moved to third on a groundout by Kellyn Wickert and then scored on an RBI ground out by Lacy Jack.
Highland came right back in the top of the third inning with an unearned run that scored on a throwing error.
The Cougars added another run in the top of the fifth to make it 3-1 before SCR-I mounted a rally in the bottom of the frame.
Jack opened the inning with a double. She moved to third on a ground out and came into score on a wild pitch. Jessica Bair and Kirsten Johnston got two out base hits but the tying run was stranded at second base.
Highland added an insurance run in the sixth when a sacrifice bunt turned into a three base error as the throw sailed down the right field line. But Lister kept the score at 4-2, retiring the next three hitters with the runner left standing on third base.
SCR-I was unable to mount any offense in the final at bat as Highland held on for the 4-2 victory.
Lister took the loss, going all seven innings. She allowed six hits, walked one and hit one batter while striking out four.
