Tigers Go 10-6 at Schuyler County Hoops Shoot-Out
The 2007-08 high school basketball season is still months away but prospective members of the Scotland County program have gotten a head start on the competition this summer.
Nine SCR-I athletes took part in the Schuyler County Shoot-out last week, playing in a total of 16 basketball games against area squads.
The Tigers went 10-6 in play at Queen City. They opened the four-day camp with six games. The Tigers beat Brookfield 29-23 followed by a 48-28 victory over Monroe City and a 44-26 win over the Macon junior varsity. Wayne ended the winning streak at three with a 45-43 defeat in over time. The Tigers fell to Palmyra 43-42 before closing out the day with a 49-46 win over Braymer.
Day two featured a 55-31 victory over Grundy County and a 43-41 win against Cairo. Crocker bested SCR-I 62-31 and Canton prevailed 39-31 over Scotland County.
Wednesday saw Scotland County best Albia 49-28 before the Tigers edged Macon 38-30. Atlanta spoiled a shot at a perfect day with a 57-42 defeat.
SCR-I closed out the camp with wins over Seneca (39-28) and Mendon (72-35) before losing to the host Rams 53-51 in overtime.
“It was a great experience for the entire team,” said Coach Ryan Bergeson. “The boys showed toughness and the willingness to improve.”
Participating in the shoot-out were Cody Musgrove, Kyle Shelley, Andrew Duley, Jacob Howard, Brandon Garnett, Matt Dice, Joe Spurgeon, Kasey Dial and Bryce Smith.
The team’s overall mark this summer is 14-8, after a 4-2 run at the Cairo team camp earlier this summer.
“Although we had some success this summer, hard work this summer and fall could get us on the winning side of some of the close games that got away,” Bergeson stated.
