SCR-I Athletes Complete 2007 Track Season at State Finals
After qualifying at the district and sectional levels, five Scotland County R-I athletes knew their 2007 track season would finally be coming to a close on May 18-19 at the Missouri Class 2 State Track Championships.
The Tigers four-man 400-meter relay squad was first to take the track. The team of Bryce Blomme, Grant Blomme, Trey Crow and Joe Spurgeon ran in the first heat race among eight of the state’s 16 best 4x400 squads. SCR-I finished in a time of 3:38.18. East Buchanan won the first heat race in a time of 3:27.66.
The top two finishers in each heat race advanced to the finals the following afternoon. SCR-I still had a shot to move on as the next four best times also qualified. But after the second heat, the Tigers season came to an end as their time ranked them 12th overall among the 16 teams.
East Buchanan’s first day win did not stand up, as Lamar won the state crown in a time of 3:26.26, just edging the preliminary’s fastest team, which finished second in 3:26.13.
Kirsten Johnston represented the Lady Tigers team the following day. She was among the 16 best runners in the state at the distance of 800 meters. The entire field took to the track, without any preliminary events.
Johnston finished 10th in the race in a time of 2:28.68. Kelsi Chowning of Liberty (Mountain View) was first in a time of 2:17.05. Terry Philiips of St. Mary’s was second.
Johnston, a junior, will be happy to see both girls go, as they are both seniors. However, 10 of the 16 finalists were underclassmen, just like Johnston, meaning the field in 2008 likely will be equally as impressive.
