Three Golfers Advance to State After Team Falls Short of District Title
The Scotland County golf team came up just two strokes short of a state playoff berth. SCR-I finished second at the Class 1 District 2 tournament held at Timber Lake Golf Course in Moberly on Wednesday, May 2nd.
Marceline captured the district title on the backs of top performances from Kaleb Lake and Brandon Meyer. The duo shot rounds of 77 to tie for top individual score. Those two top performances led Marceline to a team score of 335, two shots better than second place SCR-I at 337.
Despite falling short of qualifying as a team, Scotland County did advance three golfers to state on the individual level. The top individual scores (excluding the winning teamís performers) earn the honor to play at state.
Zach McBee carded an 80 to tie with LaPlataís Travis Tumlin for the second best individual score.
Joe Spurgeon was just off that pace in third with an 82 while Travis Trueblood tied with Marcelineís Mitchell Smith with an 84 for the fourth best individual score.
Also qualifying were Shane Kressig (84) of Salisbury, Nick DeCoster (85) and Erik Potts (87) of Canton, Ritney Smiley (88) of Milan, Donnie Hanson (90) of Canton and Devin Gordon (90) of Salisbury.
Just missing the cut was Matt Wickert of Scotland County with a 91. Andy Cowell shot a round of 105.
Teams represented at the district meet included Putnam County, Westran, Canton, LaPlata, Meadville, Marceline, Milan, Salisbury, SCR-I, Northeast (Cairo) and Princeton.
The state tournament is a 36-hole event to be played May 14-15 at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield.
