Tigers Claw Way to 73-71 Win Over Mustangs
It took a mad dash at the end for Scotland County to return from Iowa with a victory on February 12th. After trailing for three and a half quarters, SCR-I rallied late for a 73-71 victory over Davis County in Bloomfield, IA.
The Tigers fell behind 17-14 in the first period. That deficit grew to 37-27 at the intermission as the team battled foul trouble.
“We were forced to switch a lot on defense, going from man-to-man back into a zone because of the foul problems,” said Coach Ryan Bergeson.
The defensive flux hurt the Tigers as Bloomfield took advantage of the zone with a strong shooting performance from the perimeter.
“To say they shot the ball well doesn’t come close to doing it justice,” Bergeson said. “They just kept making jump shot after jump shot.”
That dominating offense helped the Mustangs ride to a 56-47 advantage with just eight minutes to play.
“We finally had to come out and play man-to-man defense,” Bergeson said. “I was forced to do a lot of subbing on offense and defense, but I told the kids it was going to come down to which team made the defensive stops.”
The Tigers made the needed plays on defense while Davis County had no answer for Bryce Blomme or Cody Musgrove down the stretch.
Blomme hit a three pointer that tied the score at 60-60 and Musgrove came up with several key rebounds down the stretch as SCR-I held on for the win.
Musgrove finished with 26 points to pace SCR-I (11-8). Bryce Blomme had 22 points and Wickert added 14 points.
