Midgets Spoil Courtwarming For Lady Tigers With 49-45 Defeat
A key fourth quarter drought combined with an inability to stop the clock late in the game kept Scotland County from improving to 2-0 in league play and allowed Putnam County to escape Memphis with a 49-45 Tri-Rivers Conference victory.
The Lady Tigers went toe-to-toe with Putnam County as the two teams traded the lead back and forth much of the contest.
SCR-I took an early lead behind buckets from Melissa Cotton and Deidra Dochterman. But the Midgets came back to lead 14-12 at the end of the first period.
Dochterman started the second period with a three pointer to keep her team close. Back-to-back buckets from Kaela Cook tied the game at 21-21 with 2:51 left in the first half. Putnam County again rallied to lead 27-23 at the intermission.
Trailing by six early in the third period, SCR-I came back once again. After just two points in the first half, SCR-Iís leading score Kirsten Johnston nailed a three pointer. She hit a jumper at the 4:06 mark to tie the score at 29-29. Cotton scored the final four points of the period but again Putnam closed out strong to lead 37-33.
The visiting team looked poised to put the contest away with a 6-0 run to start the final period. But the Midgetsí offense failed to convert on its next two possessions, leaving the door open for one final run.
Trailing 45-37, Johnston went to work, scoring six straight points to trim deficit to 46-43 with 2:17 left to play. The junior made it eight straight for SCR-I as she made a steal and converted at the other end with 1:19 left on the clock.
But still trailing by four, Scotland County failed to stop the clock down the stretch and Putnam County ran out the clock on the 49-45 defeat that dropped SCR-I to 7-10 and 1-1 in league play.
Johnston led SCR-I with 15 points. Dochterman added 10 points and Jessica Bair finished with eight points.
