Tigers Remain Unbeaten In Conference Play With 47-46 Victory Over Midgets

A made free throw, and several missed ones, proved to be the difference as Scotland County improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 47-46 come-from-behind victory over Putnam County on Courtwarming night at SCR-I.

The game was billed as a matchup between two of the conference’s premier big men in Cody Musgrove and David Fowler. Yet neither post player had much impact, at least on offense, in the first half as the teams focused their defensive efforts on stopping the post players.

Musgrove had just one bucket in the first period. Bryce Blomme took advantage of the sagging double teams aimed at stopping SCR-I’s leading scorer. The senior guard had nine points in the game’s opening eight minutes as the Tigers led 14-10.

Fowler scored his only field goal of the first half early in the second period. Instead it was Reggie Dunkin that brought the Midgets back with eight second-period points as Putnam County pulled ahead 23-21 at the break. The run could have been much worse but the Tigers got four points off the bench from Jacob Howard who filled in for Matt Wickert who was saddled with foul trouble

The post players took over in the third period. Fowler and Musgrove each had eight points as they squared off in the paint. The tradeoff saw the Midgets still clinging to a 35-32 advantage with just eight minutes to play.

SCR-I retook the lead early in the fourth quarter. After Musgrove scored in the paint, Grant Blomme converted on the fast break to make it 36-35 with 6:24 left to play. The lead went to 38-35 on a score by Howard that forced a Putnam County time-out with 5:38 remaining in the game.

But after Howard scored again in the paint, Putnam County responded with a 6-0 run to momentarily regain the lead.

The teams traded the lead twice in the game’s final two minutes as Musgrove put SCR-I on top with consecutive buckets, the latter making it 44-43 with 40.3 ticks left on the clock.

Putnam County scored the next three points and looked poised to pu the game away. But missed free throws down the stretch left the door open for SCR-I. Trailing 46-44, Wickert grabbed a long rebound off a missed free throw and went the length of the court to convert. He was fouled on the play and his made free throw put the Tigers on top 47-46 with just 13.8 seconds remaining.

The Midgets turned the ball over late and then were unable to convert on a last-second shot as the Tigers celebrated Courtwarming with a 47-46 victory.

Musgrove led SCR-I (8-7, 2-0) with 16 points. Bryce Blomme added 12 points and Howard had a career-best eight points in his first real varsity action.
