Tigers Avoid Atlanta Upset Bid In Tournament Opener

A big fourth quarter allowed Scotland County to avoid the upset in the first round of the North Shelby tourney as an underrated Atlanta squad took the Tigers to the limit in the tournament opener on January 17th.

Scotland County poured in 22 points in the final eight minutes of the game to hold off the Hornets charge and pick up the 67-60 victory.

Bryce Blomme had his best offensive game of the season. The senior guard scored in spurts, early and often for the Tigers. Blomme scored six of the Tigers first 10 points as SCR-I jumped out to a 16-10 lead after the first period.

A fast break bucket by Grant Blomme early in the second period pushed the lead to 20-11 before Atlanta started a comeback.

Bryce Blomme stalled that rally as he scored seven straight points to help the Tigers remain on top 32-26 at the break.

Atlanta opened the second half with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 34-34 with 5:22 to play in the third period. SCR-I fell behind 36-34 before Matt Wickert tied the game with a basket in the paint.

Bryce Blomme then scored the next seven points followed by a couple of free throws by Wickert. The 9-0 run gave SCR-I some breathing room at 45-36.

But Atlanta wouldnt go away. The Hornets scored the final five points of the quarter to trail just 45-41 heading into the fourth period.

Scotland County looked poised to blow the game open after a three-point play by Kyle Shelley and a bucket by Travis Trueblood pushed the advantage to double digits at 63-55 with only 2:26 to play.

But Atlanta pulled to within 63-60 with 46 seconds left on the clock. Scotland County put the game away as Matt Wickert scored on consecutive possessions as SCR-I broke the Atlanta press and sealed the 67-60 win. Wickert scored nine points down the stretch to help secure the win.

Scotland County (5-7) was led by Bryce Blomme with 21 points. Wickert finished with 20 points. Grant Blomme had eight points and Cody Musgrove was held to seven points after being saddled with early foul trouble.
