Highland Hands Lady Tigers 53-32 Loss In Tourney Consolation Game
Scotland County led Highland 5-4 early in the first period of the consolation game at the 32nd Annual Highland Tournament on January 5th. That was the end of the highlights for the Lady Tigers as the Cougars pounced on SCR-I 53-32 to drop Scotland County to 4-8 on the year.
Deidra Dochterman hit a jumper and Kirsten Johnston nailed a three pointer in the game’s opening minute to put Scotland County on top.
But Highland closed out the first period on a 11-0 run that saw the Lady Tigers go more than six minutes without tallying a point.
The drought nearly reached double digits in minutes before Johnston finally broke the spell with a jumper at the 4:10 mark of the second period. By then Highland had taken a commanding 23-7 lead.
The Cougars built a 33-9 advantage at the break as SCR-I’s only other points came on a drive to the hoop by Johnston with 2:23 left in the first half.
Jessica Bair scored six straight points to start the third period but Highland still led 45-17 with just eight minutes to play.
The Lady Tigers’ offense showed signs of life in the fourth period. Trisha Harvey hit a jumper to start the run followed by a three pointer by Bair. Johnston followed with five straight points to make the score 50-27. Valerie Oldham scored on a jumper from the wing and Harvey drilled a three pointer that made the final margin 53-32.
Johnston finished with 14 points to lead Scotland County (4-8) and Bair added nine.
Highland (6-5) was led in scoring by Abigail Gaus with 12 points and Ashlan Koche and Kalyn Lay with 10 points each.
