Canton Overcomes Poor Shooting Night To Beat Lady Tigers 52-37 To Remain Unbeaten

Generally a poor shooting night dooms a basketball team to defeat. But on Wednesday night at the Highland Tourney, Canton used a big offensive rebounding advantage teamed with a large number of Scotland County turnovers to overcome a down night on offense and beat the Lady Tigers 52-37.

Early on it looked like SCR-I might hand Canton its first loss of the year.

Neither team lit it up on offense early in the contest. Scotland County went the first five minutes of the game with only baskets by Kaela Cook and Kirsten Johnston. The shots werenít falling for Canton either.

Johnston hit another jumper and followed it up with a three pointer to give SCR-I a 9-8 lead with 1:03 left to play in the opening frame.

The two teams traded the lead back and forth to start the second period. Deidra Dochterman knotted the score at 12-12 with a three pointer and Jessica Bair tied it again with a pair of free throws with 4:26 left in the first half.

But Canton went to work on the offensive glass and used numerous second chance opportunities to pull ahead 20-14 with 2:51 on the clock.

Melissa Cotton drilled a three pointer to send Scotland County to the locker room down 21-17.

Johnston opened the third period with a three pointer but Canton went on a 10-2 run to lead 31-22 with 3:09 to play. Johnston went to work again, converting a three-point play followed by a three pointer from behind the arc to make the score 34-28 at the end of three quarters of play.

Scotland County pulled to within four points to start the fourth period as Johnston stayed hot, nailing another three pointer followed by a fastbreak bucket that made it 37-33.

Cantonís press finally took its toll in the fourth period. Turnovers allowed Canton to go on a 12-0 run that put the game away for Canton.

Trailing 45-33 with 4:07 left Scotland County was unable to mount one last charge, dropping to 4-7 on the year with the 52-37 defeat.

Johnston led all scorers with 25 points to pace Scotland County. Lindsey Lillard led Canton (9-0) with 17 points.
