Tigers Canít Catch Canton After Slow Start In 60-38 Loss

Scotland County gave a young Canton squad a second chance to hold on to a big early lead, and this time the Tigers got the job done as they bested SCR-I 60-38 in the consolation game of the Highland Tourney on January 5th.

Playing without leading scorer Cody Musgrove who started the game on the bench with a knee injury, SCR-I came out of the gates slowly.

Four early turnovers by Scotland County allowed Canton to jump out to a 6-0 lead before Matt Wickert scored on an offensive rebound. Canton followed that up with a 5-0 run before Musgrove came off the bench to score in the paint.

But the return of the team leader did little to halt the fast-paced attack of Canton, which led 16-6 after eight minutes of play.

Scotland County pulled within 19-11 early in the second period after a couple fastbreak scores by Grant and Bryce Blomme, forcing Canton to call a time-out.

The stoppage worked as the Tigers regrouped and shut down Scotland County the remainder of the first half. The lone points for SCR-I came on a three pointer by Matt Wickert, as the rest of the Tigers struggled to put the ball in the basket, allowing Canton to lead 29-14 at the break.

The offensive woes continued for Scotland County in the third period. The Tigers managed just five points as Coach Ryan Bergeson turned to the bench to try to spark SCR-I.

The points finally arrived in the fourth period for Scotland County but it was too little, too late to overcome the 39-19 deficit.

Wickert scored in the paint and Grant Blomme hit a three pointer to give Scotland County a ray of hope. The 20-point margin was quickly trimmed to 13 early in the fourth period.

But Canton would not allow its lead to evaporate for a second time this year. Scotland County rallied for an early deficit on December 28th to beat Canton in the final seconds. The Tigersí rally stalled at the unlucky number 13 and Canton went on to win 51-34.

Bryce Blomme led Scotland County (4-6) with 10 points. Musgrove and Wickert each added eight points.

Canton (5-5) was led by Justin Ellison with 15 points and Drew Ayers with 15.
