Second Perfect Season Eludes Eighth Grade Girls

Dreams of another perfect year evaporated late in the 2006 season for the Scotland County eighth grade girls basketball team. After going 14-0 last year, the Lady Tigers started the eighth grade year a perfect 12-0 before finally losing their first junior high contest on December 12th in Edina.

SCR-I finished the season with a 12-2 record giving the girls a 26-2 mark in their junior high careers.

The year got off to a rocky start with a nail-biter that pitted father versus son in the coaching ranks as Gary Hunziker looked down at the opponents bench to see son Jaryt leading Clark County. The Tigers prevailed 31-29 behind nine points from Anna Duley and eight from Jamie Shaw.

Ashley Tague posted 10 points the following night as SCR-I beat Canton 34-25. Skyler Alderton pitched in with six points.

A 41-19 victory over Putnam County made the team 3-0. Aimee Dale led the way with 10 points. Tague and Duley each added seven.

Schuyler County was the next victim as the Lady Tigers prevailed 37-24 behind eight points each from Shaw and Tague.

A rematch against Clark County was no easier for SCR-I as the Lady Tigers just held on for the 32-27 win. Tague topped the scoring with seven points while Duley, Dale and Shaw each finished with six points.

The teams mark went to 6-0 with a 45-12 demolition of Milan. Dale posted 11 points and Ivy Hauk and Melanie Triplett both had four points.

SCR-I stood tall in a 38-10 victory over Putnam County. Dale had a season-high 14 points to top the scoring.

Shaw exploded for a team-best 22 points as she single handily outscored Schuyler County in a 40-20 win. Monica Weidenbenner and Tague each had six points.

North Shelby did not have the answer to the Tigers run as they fell 27-14 on November 20th. Dale led the way with 10 points and Shaw added eight.

Putnam County narrowed the margin but still came up short in a December 5th rematch that saw the Lady Tigers prevail 32-26. Shaw had eight points to lead the way with Dale and Alderton combining for 12 points.

Knox County derailed the SCR-I winning streak at 12 with a 24-20 come-from-behind victory. Dale and Shaw each had six points in the losing effort.

Scotland County rebounded with a 36-6 win over Milan in the opening round of the Schuyler County tourney. Dale paced the Lady Tigers with 10 points while Tague had eight and Hauk had six.

But SCR-I had to settle for third place in the tourney as Clark County finally found the answer to SCR-I and upset the Lady Tigers 23-21.

Scotland County bested the Indians seventh grade squad in the tourneys third place game by a final of 37-16. Shaw scored 10 points.
