VELMA VAN BAALEN

Velma Van Baalen, 79, died December 14, 2007, at the Living Center East in Cedar Rapids, IA.

She was born February 13, 1928, in Schuyler County, MO, to Louie and Edith (Rorabaugh) Woods.

Velma was married to Russell Van Baalen on December 25, 1946 in Memphis, MO.

She was a Memphis High School graduate in Memphis, MO, in 1945.

Velma grew up in Memphis, MO, before moving to Newton, IA in 1953. She later moved to Portland, OR, for a few years before moving to Newton, IA. In 2003 Velma moved to Cedar Rapids, IA.

Velma worked as a homemaker and also as a silk screener for the Vernon Company in Newton for 30 years, retiring in 1990.

She was a member of Local U.A.W. 997, The Alliance Church in Cedar Rapids, VFW Women’s Auxiliary; and a past member of the Community Heights Alliance Church Newton.

Velma enjoyed reading crocheting, camping, trips to Branson, MO, ceramics, and making quilts.

She is survived by a son, Keith (and Heidi) Van Baalen of Sandy, OR; daughter, Beverly (and Tim) Spain of Cedar Rapids, IA; daughter-in-law, Eloise Van Baalen of Knoxville, IA; four grandchildren, T.J. Spain, Megan Spain, Chelsea Van Baalen, and Jacob Van Baalen; three sisters, Myrtle (and Craig) Smith of Memphis, MO, Lerea (and Larry) Bloomfield of Memphis, MO, and Linda (and Phil) Hicks of Danville, IA; sister-in-law, Arlene Van Baale of Newton, IA; brother-in-law, Milo (and LaVerne) Van Baalen of Grovetown, GA; and many nieces and nephews.

Velma was preceded in death by parents; husband, Russell; brother, Vern Woods; and a son, Terry.

Funeral services were held December 19, 2007 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, IA, with the Rev. Allen Biere of Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Cedar Rapids, IA. Burial was in Silent City Cemetery in Monroe, IA. Memorial to the American Cancer Society or the Amenity Hospice in Cedar Rapids, IA, may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home.
