LEWIS HENRY FORSYTHE
(8/18/1918 Ė 2007)



Lewis Henry Forsythe was born August 18, 1918 in Tama County, IA to Luther C. and Alice Penry Forsythe.

He attended school in Iowa and Scotland County, MO, before graduating from Lancaster High School with the class of 1939.

He began his college training at the University of Missouri. Because of the war effort, he then attended the Lincoln Electric Welding School in Cleveland, OH. He graduated from there prior to joining the army in 1942. He was a member of the 260th Ordinance Company where he served as a welder in the SW Pacific. While there, he received a back injury from which he never recovered. He was discharged in 1946 and following three spinal surgeries, was advised by his physicians to return to school.

Lewis received his BSE degree from Northeast Missouri State Teacherís College with a triple major in Mathematics, Science, and Industrial Education. He received his Masters degree from Northeast Missouri State University in Math Education. Later he attended Iowa State University at Ames where he did graduate studies in Physics. He taught mathematics and science in northeast Missouri schools for 28 years. He was also a farmer most of his life, did production welding for J.I. Case and John Deere corporations, and owned and operated an outdoor skating rink in several northeast Missouri towns with his partner, Waldo Roberts.

On March 28, 1942, he married his high school classmate, Betty F. Graves. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2007. Their four children and spouses are as follows: Paul of Lancaster, MO, Terry Rezai and husband, Amir of Bloomfield, IA, Wade and wife, Debbie of Columbia, MO, and Todd and wife, Donita of St. Louis, MO; Lewis and Betty have six grandchildren, Ashley Rezai of Austin, TX, Hayley Rezai of Waterloo, IA, Logan and Taylor Forsythe of Columbia, MO, and Ryland and Emily Forsythe of St. Louis, MO; Lewis is also survived by one sister, Alice Fulton of Davenport, IA, and two brothers, Roland of Hermann, MO and Harry of Magnolia, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Eunice Samuels of Traer, IA, Vivian Martin and Margaret Carstens of Davenport, IA; three brothers, his twin brother, Lawrence Penry of Moline, IL, Robert of Dysart, IA, and Kenneth of Maysville, MO.

Lewis loved his family and was especially interested in his grandchildren and their education and sports activities. He traveled widely in all 50 states and all the Canadian Provinces, especially for the purpose of fishing. He had served as a project leader for the Lancaster 4-H Club and as a leader with the Boy Scouts. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, National Education Association, and Missouri State Teachers Association. He was a good husband, a wonderful father, and a great Grandpa and will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Funeral services were held on December 7, 2007 at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, MO with pastor Sonny Smyser officiating. Music was provided by organist, Margie Tippett and soloist, Cole Tippett. Pallbearers were Randall Ayer, Robert Fremon, Willie Beeler, Gary Smith, John Tippett, and David Gibson. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Reynolds and Jim Reynolds. Memorials have been established for the Schuyler County Nutrition Site. Burial was in the Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster, MO. Military Rites were given by the Schuyler County VFW Post # 5898. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster, MO.
