PHILIP EUGENE PAYNE
(10/27/1935 11/25/2007)



Philip Eugene Payne, 72, Memphis, MO, died November 25, 2007, in a car accident during his return trip home from a Thanksgiving gathering with his family.

He was born October 27, 1935, in Keokuk, IA, the youngest son of Philip D. and Jeannette B. Payne.

After high school in Memphis, he graduated from The University of Missouri Columbia with a BSBA in 1957.

Post-graduation he was inducted into the U.S. Navy and in 61 was honorably discharged as an LTJC. He then went to mortuary school in Chicago, IL and returned to Memphis to join his father in the furniture and funeral business, D.W. Payne and Sons. For the next 40+ years he served Memphis as a business owner and funeral director.

Phil is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sue Payne; three daughters, Kimberly Payne, Naples, FL, Stephanie Deer and husband, Ross, Leawood, KS, and Kit Colpitts and husband, Peter, San Francisco, CA; two grandchildren, Bryn and Brady Deer; brother, Bob Payne, Evergreen, CO; niece, Susan Payne, Denver, CO; nephews, David and Dexter Payne, Boulder, CO; father-in-law, Boyd T. Croley, Memphis, MO; brother-in-law, Tom Croley and wife, Andrea, Springfield, MO; nephew, Trevor Croley and wife, Cabrini, Springfield, MO; niece, Lindsley Withey and husband, Matt, Denver, CO; and great-niece and nephew, Claire and Cooper Croley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Jeannette Payne; sister, Carolanne Payne; sister-in-law, Ruth Payne; mother-in-law, Winifred Croley; and nephew, Andrew Croley.

Phil enjoyed his life as husband, Dad and Gramps. He loved spending time in, on and around the water, gardening and cooking. He was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Memphis, an Eagle Scout, Phi Kappa Psi fraternity member, a life-time member of the University of Missouri Alumni Association, past president of the SCR-I school board, member and past president of Rotary International, Paul Harris Fellow award recipient, member of Memphis Masonic Lodge #16 A.F. & A.M. and Moila Shriners. He also spent a significant amount of time volunteering for various causes including the Missouri Funeral Directors Association.

Memorials are suggested to the The First Presbyterian Church, Scotland County Library, or Scotland County Health and Fitness Center and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Funeral services were held on November 30, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church, Memphis, MO, with Rev. Charles McCracken and Pam Glasgow, officiating. Musicians were Ann Luther, organist, Lori Fulk, soloist, and Dexter Payne on saxophone. Pallbearers were Ray Ward, Gary Dial, Danny Emel, Vernon Tippett, Harlo Donelson, Duane McDonald, E. Richard Webber, and J. Foster Courtney. Interment was in Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO. Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel of Memphis, MO.
