Roger Dale Baker, 56, of Queen City, MO, passed away at his rural home in Queen City, MO, on December 1, 2007, after a lengthy battle with lung cancer with his wife and children at his side.

The son of Howard Lee and Melba (Rowland) Baker, he was born and raised in Putnam County, MO.

He attended school in Queen City, MO till the 10th grade and then enlisted in the United States Navy where he served 435 days of active service in Vietnam during 1969-1970 on PBR Riv Ron 13. He was combat wounded while everyone else on his PBR boat was killed, he continued to fight. Being the only survivor and POW, he received the Purple Heart for combat wounded and Bronze Star for bravery. He was honorably discharged in 1970 and again in January 26, 1975.

He was united in marriage to Linda Carroll Oliver on January 12, 1970 and to this union two children were born, Kimberly and Jearmie.

Survivors include his wife, Linda C. Baker of Queen City, MO; his children, Kim Seegmiller and husband, Lynn of Glenwood, MO and Jearmie Baker and wife, Melissa of Mystic, IA; three grandchildren, Heather and Bryanna Seegmiller of Glenwood, MO and Jacie Baker of Mystic, IA; his mother, Melba Rowland of Queen City, MO; two brothers, Marvin Baker of Queen City, MO and William Baker of Lathrop, MO; one nephew, Shane Baker and wife, Jenny of Bonner Springs, MO; and one great-nephew, Michael Baker of Bonner Springs, MO; other family members and a host of good friends.

Roger was preceded in death by his grandmother, Goldie Followwill; his father, Howard Lee Baker; and one sister, Billie Jean Baker.

Roger enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and made it to the Sturgis Bike Rally in 2006. He loved his farm, the livestock and his dog, Rowdy. He enjoyed planting flowers and his very favorite flower, which was Honeysuckle, was planted all over the farm. He was very close to his family and friends. Those that knew him well, knew he was generous and giving. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2007 at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, MO at 2:00 p.m. with Sonny Smyser, pastor of the Lancaster United Methodist Church of Lancaster, MO officiating. Special CD selections will be played during the memorial service. Special friends of note include Brian Jones, Fritz Gottman, Mike Sparks, Donnie Sparks, Joe Applegate, Roger Talbert, David Robbins, George Branscomb, and Ronnie Snider. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial services. Memorials have been established for the Lord’s Cupboard or Jimtown Cemetery. Burial will be in the Jimtown Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster .
