CARROLL GENE KITTLE
(7/2/1931 - 9/29/2007)

Carroll Gene Kittle, 76, of Arbela died Saturday morning, September 29, 2007, at his home.

He was born the son of Clarence Hayden and Maude Esther (Leeper) Kittle on July 2, 1931 near Azen in Scotland County, MO.

Carroll attended Fairview School for four years, Granger for eight years before graduating from the Granger High School, and then attended one year at Kirksville State Teachers College. After graduation, he taught school for three years at Bourn in rural Northwest Scotland County until he was drafted into the United States Army at age 21.

He was a corporal in the army and served in combat action during the Korean War. For his service, Carroll was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars, a United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and a Distinguished Unit Citation.

Carroll was married to the former Reta Violet Phillips, the love of his life, on June 20, 1954 at the Memphis United Methodist Church by the Rev. Longstrom.

He had joined the Prairie View Methodist Church at an early age, six or seven. The Kittles attended the Arbela United Methodist Church while they were raising their family.

The Kittles farmed in rural Arbela, and for a time Carroll worked at the rubber plant in Keokuk and the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.

Carroll was a loving and devoted family man. His first love was being with Reta and other family members. He enjoyed being outdoors and worked on the farm until he retired. He especially liked working with cattle and other livestock. In his spare time, Carroll did crossword puzzles and played cards with family and friends. He loved to spend time by attending his grandchildrens activities. But most of all, Carroll just liked being with Reta and his family.

He was a member of the Greensburg A.F. & A.M. Lodge #414 and the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial V.F.W. Post #4958 of Memphis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Doris Esther Kittle; and a nephew, Jerry Kice.

He is survived by his wife, Reta, of the home; his children, Gary and wife Debbie Kittle of Memphis and Marla and husband Tom ODonnell, Terri and husband Wayne Bulen, and David and wife Gina Kittle, all of Arbela; a sister, Clarice and husband Delmar Kice of Arbela; a brother-in-law, Emmett and wife Maxine Phillips of Memphis; grandchildren, Emily and husband Jeff Frederick and Katie, Caleb, and Betsey Kittle, all of Memphis, Amelia and husband Mike Riney of St. Peters, MO, Mandi, Andrew, Angie, and Kassie Bulen and Moriah Kittle, all of Arbela, Bridgett Cornelison and friend Steven Wills of Kirksville; great grandchildren, Kara Bulen and Jacob and Anna Wills; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Pastor Harold Marshall officiating. Burial was in the Memphis Cemetery. Caleb Kittle, Andrew Bulen, Mike Riney, Jeff Frederick, Scott Kice, and Greg Phillips served as pallbearers.
