Mary Ellen Bertram, 93, of Colony, MO, passed away March 10, 2007, at the LaBelle Manor Care Center in LaBelle, MO.

She was born September 3, 1913 in Knox County, MO, the daughter of Charles and Anna Green Hind Litchfield.

On May 28, 1936 at Ewing, MO, she was united in marriage to Gilvie D. Bertram.

Surviving are her husband, Gilvie Bertram of the LaBelle Manor in LaBelle, MO; one daughter, Ellen Sue Morice and husband, Bill of Fenton, MO; four sisters-in-law, Gertrude Deegan of Las Vegas, NV, Irene Mayfield of Rutledge, MO, Anna Lee York of Memphis, MO, and Rose Fishback of Kirksville, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bertram received her education in the Progressive rural school in Lewis County, graduated from the Knox City High School in 1930 and attended Kirksville State Teachers College. She lived all her life in the Colony area where she and her husband were engaged in farming and raising polled Hereford cattle. Mary Ellen taught school for several years in both Knox and Lewis County and also taught in the Colony school for many years.

Mary Ellen was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Rutledge Chapter #343; a member of the Colony Baptist Church and for many years was a correspondent for the Edina Sentinel. In her earlier years she was active in the Colony 4-H and Saddle Club. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Funeral services were held March 13, 2007 at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO. The Reverend Steve Jarvis officiated the services. Music was provided by Carol Hayes, organist and Joann Layman, soloist. Burial was in the Colony Cemetery. Casket bearers were Charles Mayfield, Chad York, Elza Hustead, Don Miller, Bob Pape, and Terry Guinn.

Eastern Star Services were held March 12, 2007, in the Hudson-Rimer Chapel conducted by Rutledge Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #343.
