Curt Junior Baker, 77, of Macon, MO, passed away at the Macon Health Care Center in Macon, MO, on December 25, 2006.

The son of Curt Richard and Beulah (Kennedy) Baker, he was born on July 13, 1929, in Saline County, Missouri.

On July 23, 1952, he was united in marriage to Valeria Mobley and to this union five children were born, Steve, Stanley, Jo Ann, Diane, and Linda.

Survivors include his children, Jo Ann Ready and husband, Allan of Ottumwa, IA, Diane Bailey and husband, Steve, of Keokuk, IA, Linda Erickson and husband, Steve of Des Moines, IA; Curt Steven Baker of Oak Park, IL, and Stanley Alan Baker of Ojai, CA; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vesta Shelley of Pulaski, IA, and Edna Archer of Milton, IA; two brothers, Carl Baker and wife, Patty of Clearfield, UT, and Charles “Bill” Baker and wife, Evelyn of Raymore, MO.

Curt was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wayne and Ray Baker; and one sister, Minnie Tucker.

Curt served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Following his time in the service, he moved to Keokuk, IA, for approximately 30 years, then Des Moines, IA, for approximately 10 years where he was a factory worker. He then retired to Kirksville, MO, in 1999. Curt attended country schools in the Memphis, MO area, and even though he did not finish high school, because his help was needed on the family farm during World War II, he was remarkably well read, and was self-educated on many subjects, especially Civil War history and church history.

Funeral services were held on December 28, 2006, at the Norman Funeral Home. Paul Sponheim, Associate Pastor of the North Gate Alliance Church of Ottumwa, IA, officiated. Music was CD selections. Pallbearers were Frank Ready, Thomas Ready, Chris Lyle, Allan Ready, Kade Jackson, and Riley Jackson. Memorials have been established for the Richland Cemetery and the Adair County Library. Burial was held in the Richland Cemetery, north of Crawford, MO. Military rites were conducted by the Scotland County VFW Post #4958. Arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster and Downing, MO.
