Battery Thieves Fail to Keep Going, and Going, and Going…

A certain type of batteries is known to keep going, and going and going… Apparently those weren’t the type of power sources stolen recently in rural Scotland County.

Two men are in custody of the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department after they attempted to steal several batteries from a home located on Highway 136 near the Clark County line. But the getaway car wasn’t able to keep going and going. The Lee County Iowa Sheriff’s Department recovered the car stuck in a ditch after running off an icy road.

The property owner reported the theft in progress, allowing the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department to quickly respond to the scene. Scanner traffic made area residences aware of the description of the vehicle, resulting in numerous phone tips from callers reporting seeing the vehicle heading through rural northwest Clark County before it entered Iowa.

The stolen batteries were recovered in the vehicle. Arrested were Phineas H. Eicher, 25, of Kahoka and Phillip M. Grandinetti, 21, of Bonaparte, IA.

The Scotland County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Lee County and Van Buren County sheriff’s departments in Iowa.

Deputy Bryan Whitney stated the suspects were booked on charges of theft under $500 and given a court date of January 8th.
