Chamber to Kickoff Holiday Season With Debut of New Christmas Lights
The Friday following Thanksgiving is traditionally the opening of the Christmas shopping season. In an effort to kickoff the special event locally, the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) will host its annual Lighting of the Square festivities on November 23rd.
The MACC encourages area residents to join with the group Friday night in Memphis as the switch is thrown for the first time on the organizationís new Christmas lights on the square. Santa Claus will be present to meet with the children. He will open Santaís House on the courthouse lawn to receive letters to Santa.
The Chamber will host special entertainment for the crowd and a number of promotional gifts will be given away. The winners will be announced for the Chamberís Memphis Buck giveaways following the lighting ceremony with lucky winners taking home $100, $50 and several other smaller denomination prizes redeemable at any MACC member.
The Scotland County Antique Fair Association will host a soup supper at its building on the west side of the square beginning at 4:00 p.m. that evening.
Spectators can also choose to take in a movie at the Memphis Theatre on the square, with movie tickets still just $2.
Several Memphis merchants will keep the fun rolling through the special weekend. A number of businesses will host Sunday open houses on November 25th for holiday shopping specials. A special Christmas cookie decorating event will be held at the Scotland County Rotary Club building on the east side of the square from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This event offers babysitters for parents wanting to take advantage of the holiday open house shopping opportunities.
Other upcoming holiday events will include the Epsilon Iota Christmas Bazaar scheduled for December 1st.
The Memphis Theatre will host special holiday matinees on Saturdays in December (1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd). Showtime is 1:30 p.m. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring a canned food item for donation to the local food pantry in lieu of admission.
The Chamber members will meet Tuesday, December 11th at The Fabius. The group will sack Christmas candy.
On Saturday, December 15th, Santa will arrive at the Memphis VFW courtesy of the Memphis Fire Department. St. Nick will kick off the holiday fire truck rides as the first passenger. Children will be offered rides on the fire trucks following the completion of the Saturday matinee at the theatre continuing a holiday tradition of more than 50 years.
Guests at the VFW will get the chance to pass on their Christmas wish lists to Santa himself. Each child will receive a bag of holiday goodies courtesy of the Chamber and the VFW.
