Gorin R-III Named Recipient of 21st Century Learning Center Grant

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has sent congratulations to the Gorin R-III School District for being a new recipient from the second round of the 21st Century Community Center for the 2007-2008 school year.

The purpose of the 21st Century Community Learning Center is to create community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities for children to assist students in meeting state and local standards in core academic subjects, and to offer literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children. It also provides a safe, caring and nurturing place for extended learning, social, recreational, and personal life skills development for students during non-school hours, both before and after-school. The program is not a continuation of the school day, but extends, expands, and enriches the opportunities for experiential learning, social development, and recreation. It incorporates a strong partnership of school, family, and community members that collaboratively contribute to the growth of students as they mature into caring, competent and responsible adults.

The Gorin R-III Community Learning Center will provide tutoring, mentoring, homework help, academic enrichment (such as hands-on math, reading/language arts, and science programs), community service opportunities, as well as music, character education, arts, physical activity, and cultural activities. The center will also help working parents by providing a safe environment for students during non-school hours. During the school year the hours of operation for the learning center will be from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. The $150,000.00 award will fund salaries, transportation, supplies and equipment, as well as professional development.

The Scotland County Memorial Hospital, University of Missouri Extension Office, and Scotland County Sheriffís Office have partnered with the Gorin R-III School District to provide services and resources as a part of the community learning center.
