Inaugural Fun Walk, Run Draws Over 125 Participants

by Dr. Jeff Davis

Race organizers and participants in the Scotland County Antique Fair 5K/1.5 mile Fun Walk and Run enjoyed a beautiful late summer morning and a larger than expected crowd for the inaugural running of Saturdayís event. With clear blue skies, light winds and temperatures in the low 70ís, over 125 walkers and runners as well as 30 race volunteers took to the streets of Memphis for this yearís fun walk and run. Race organizer, Trinity Davis, said 92 individuals were pre-registered for the race and 40 more participants showed up early Saturday morning to enjoy the occasion.

After everyone checked in and race T-shirts were distributed, the crowd lined up on the square in front of Memphis City Hall where race director, Dr. Jeff Davis, gave the command and signal to begin the race. Runners completed a 3.12 mile (5K) loop around the east side of Memphis along with several of the walkers while the rest of the group traveled on a 1.5 mile course out to the Scotland County Care Center and back to the square. All racers completed the course safely, enjoying the scenery along the way.

Members of Scotland County R-I High School National Honor Society and sponsor Jo Beth Harvey served as course attendants. Volunteers from the Scotland County Care Center, Scotland County Emergency Medical Services and Primrose Realty provided water stations along the route, and City Marshall John Myers assisted participants with traffic.

The overall winner of the 5K run was Jesse Sewell of Kahoka in a time of 19:05. The fastest finishing female runner was Leslie Duley of Memphis with a time of 24:06. An award was presented to Haylee McMinn as the youngest participant and Vera Monroe as the eldest. Three households registered 5 participants from their family including Thad and Nancy Trump of Kahoka, Dan and Nancy Hite of Memphis, and Evan and Tammy Smoot of Drakesville, IA.

All participants were entered into a drawing for prizes purchased or donated by area businesses and race supporters. The grand prize, a 27Ē flat screen HDTV, paid for by the Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH) was won by Ava Quillin. Two DVD player/recorders, also from MFH, were won by Ronnie Young and Leland Hyde. Jacob Blessing won the $50 cash prize compliments of Dr. Bob and Sue Schneider. Bailey McNamar won a certificate for a pair of Avia running/walking shoes from Coffrin Shoes, and John Austin and Carol Trump won Avia duffle bags from Coffrins. Valerie Brown won a certificate for a pair of New Balance shoes from Cookís Mens Store. Gas and More provided two $25 BP gas cards which were won by Julie Clapp and Donna Bailey. Ian See, Zach Miller, Mary Droege, Beverly Oliver, and Debbie Blessing each won a free large Caseyís Pizza coupon and Whitman Quillin won a free lunch buffet courtesy of the Fabius Restaurant.

All participants received a bag of heart healthy information from the Scotland County Health Department. Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. provided post-race refreshments, and Jís Foods provided healthy snacks to refuel the race participants. The race T-shirts were designed by Karri Feeney, and advertising was by the Memphis Democrat and KMEM Radio. A grant from SCMH covered event essentials and off-set the cost of the T-shirts.

Race organizer, Dr. Jeff Davis, commented, ďThis was an outstanding turnout for the first event of its kind in Scotland County. The race committee is very grateful to the volunteers and race supporters for their commitment to Scotland County and the health of this community.Ē Davis believes the Scotland County Antique Fair venue and the beautiful weather accounted for the excellent participation. Organizers are already planning for next yearís Antique Fair 5K/1.5 mile Fun Walk and Run. If anyone has ideas or would like to help plan, contact Trinity Davis.
