Board of Education Prepares For Start of School Year at August Meeting

As the 2007 school year quickly approaches, the Scotland County R-I Board of Education put the finishing touches on a number of preparations during the August 9th regular meeting.

The board received bids from three companies for the purchase of a new bus. Ponder Equipment, Thomas buses; Midwest Transit, International buses; and Central States with Bluebird buses each submitted bids for a 53 passenger bus, and a 65 passenger bus.

The board voted 7-0 to accept the low bid for a 65 passenger International bus from Midwest Transit for a purchase price of $70,205 with a trade allowance of $3,500 for a total price of $66,705.

Matt Buford, Mike Campbell, Ken Hull, and Matt McKee were present to discuss the possibility of adding baseball in the future. The board agreed to gather more information for discussion at the board workshop on September 12th.

Bids were received from Memphis Lumber and Hopkins Lumber for materials to frame and enclose the new building trades house. Bids were reviewed by the committee of Stacy Alexander, George Koontz, and Bill Cottrell who recommended the board accept the low bid of $28,216 from Hopkins Lumber. The board voted 7-0 to follow the recommendation of the committee.

The board voted 7-0 to set the tax rate for 2007-2008 at $3.36. The tax rate of $3.36 is below the state performance levy of $3.43, which by law will require schools with the lower rate to submit in writing that their students are receiving an adequate education not impacted by a lack of local effort.

The schoolís contractor for the new HVAC system, CTS, is responsible for placing the high school ball field back in working order following the completion of the project. SCR-I Athletic Director Kevin Gundy has been exploring ideas for the reseeding of the softball field. The discussion involves getting the most out of the dollars spent on the field with combined efforts between all groups involved, including CTS.

The board asked Gundy and the school administration to gather more information for discussion at the board workshop in September.

In executive session the board voted 7-0 to assign coaching duties to Matt Reel (junior high girls assistant basketball); Ryan Bergeson (junior high boys assistant basketball); and Kevin Gundy (assistant varsity football).

The board voted 7-0 to employ a student worker through the GAMM program at no cost to the district and to advertise for a part time and a full time para professional.

In the last order of business the board voted 7-0 to offer employment to the following non-certified staff for the 07-08 school year:

Bobbie Anderson, Lois Bertram, Schelle Cooley, Tammi Dale, Jackie Doubet, Jane Gelbach, Matt Kliethermes, Shelby McAfee, Debbie Sears, Terry Arnold, Jenny Aldridge, Pat Arnold, Linda Clark, Arlene Dochterman (kitchen), Tamera Knupp, Vickie Mauck, Roger Armstrong, Stan Carter, Arlene Dochterman (transportation), Tom Fender, Elaine Forrester, Penny Holt, Jeri McDonald, Danny Norton, Lois Shelley, Bonnie Young, and Ronnie Young.
